Demon LinuX

Description
(This is in Alpha stage. Not a public release.)
Demon LinuX is a full-featured i386 Linux Operating System that specializes in Multimedia Content Creation. Demon LinuX 1.0 is based on the Stable and Testing Debian Linux Distributions running the efficient LXDE Desktop Environment. It is further enhanced with Tony Brijeski's Remastersys Installer, Control Panel and Backup Utility. In addition to common everyday Computer tasks it features a full complement of the best F/OSS Multimedia Applications available allowing users to enjoy Multitrack Audio Recording and Mixing, Video Capturing, Editing and Converting, DVD Authoring and Creation, iPod Tools and more...

Credits/Thanks
I can't list everybody but here's a start at least! Debian GNU Linux, LXDE, Tony Brijeski (Remastersys), Paul Davis and Ardour Team (JACK, Ardour), Mike Start (linuxDSP), Rui Nuno Capela (Qjackctl, QSynth, Qtractor), Chris Cannam (DSSI-VST), Peder Hedlund (Bristol Launcher), Torben Hohn (FST), Sora (Meliae Icons). **Thanks also to the numerous other unsung Developers and Debian Packagers for their various Applications included in Demon LinuX 1.0.**

Minimum PC Reqs
General Computer Use - Intel Pentium 3 or AMD Athlon(XP) 800mhz+, 256mb of RAM+, 10Gig HDD Partition

Multimedia Creation - Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon(XP) 1.8Ghz+, 512mb of RAM+, 20Gig HDD Partition

Demon LinuX 1.0 is not intended to be yet another Linux Distro, it is a customized ready to use "Snapshot" built using the Debian GNU Linux Distribution enhanced with the user-friendliness of the Remastersys Control Panel and the efficient yet attractive LXDE Desktop. The ethos is simple...Install and Create. People new to Linux or curious about it's A/V capabilities should be able to use it right away without having to master Repositories, Terminal Commands, and Specialized Kernels as soon as they boot into a fresh install. This LiveDVD bootable image is ready to use as soon as it's installed without any updates or upgrades, but of course both are available when needed. To enable the best Audio Recording performance an "Audio Extras" folder is contained in the users home folder with a choice of 2 Realtime "-rt" Kernels that can be installed if users want. Multimedia, Flash Player 10 and DVD Support are functional out of the box.

Demon LinuX 1.0 has been developed with the philosophy that the Operating System should be as resource efficient as possible to ensure that the most Memory and CPU be available to the Applications themselves, in keeping with that it does not include Compiz 3D Compositing support. This also makes it a great candidate for keeping older computers productive, working and out of Landfills as well as maximizing the benefits of newer Multi-Core machines. Demon LinuX 1.0 focuses on a core of well established, stable Linux A/V Applications instead of including every possible offering regardless of maturity. Of course there is repository access to thousands more Debian Packages of all kinds.

Usage
- Download the demlinux1r1-lxde-i386-en.iso file
- Burn the ISO file to a DVD-R using your existing Burning Software
- Set your Computer BIOS to Boot from your DVD Drive if it doesn't by default
- Boot Into Demon Linux 1.0 to Test and Demo with no changes to your existing OS
- To Install launch the Remastersys Installer (Experience with Drive Partitioning is Recommended)

Hints/Tips
-> The Remastersys Installer requires an ext3 Partition and a Swap Partition. It will launch the Partition
-> Editor to create them, if these Partitions already exist simply close the Editor and continue the Install
-> The "My Documents" Folder on the Desktop is the User's "Home"
-> Use the Remastersys Control Panel for System Administration, 3D Video Drivers and much more...
-> Use System Tools --> Add Launcher to Desktop Tool to create Desktop Icons
-> Use Network --> WiFi Radar to detect and connect to Wireless Networks
-> The PCManFM File Manager has no "Trash". Deleted files are deleted permanently.
-> Remastersys Backup will allow you to customize DL to your own liking and Remaster it, please note that this can only be done with the Stock Kernel not the -rt Kernels
-> To get FireWire/DV working add yourself as user to the "disk" group using Remastersys Control Panel
-> To easily manage VST Plugins Symlink to the /home/USERNAME/vst folder like this in a terminal (as root):
"ln -s /home/USERNAME/vst /usr/local/lib/" *Note* USERNAME=Your User Name

There is an optional ArdourVST 2.8 Package in the Audio Extras folder in "Home". This package will allow you to use VST Plugins with Ardour using Wine. ArdourVST is NOT supported by the Ardour Developers and is significantly less stable than Ardour in it's native Linux incarnation. Use this at your own risk. Also the Ardour.desktop launcher in /usr/share/applications/ has to be modified to Exec=ardourvst to launch this package.

Updates/Packages:
Use the Update Manager or Synaptic Package Manager for General Debian Updates

Known bugs:

When custom theme is implemented it crashes several of the multi-media apps. Also, when loading it up, it seems to revert back to before the customizations were implemented. Will try and work the bugs out. But I am just 1 person, may take awhile.

Download:

I will be uploading as-is soon-ish. If anyone who has linux experience wishes to help beta this, please let me know.

  1. Hey, I don't mind making a review about this cool Linux OS. Contact me at manmohanjit1@hotmail.com.
It looks very attractive. I just got to ask, does it support Intel DG33FB. I have tried mostly all the Linux Distros but none of the do.

    BTW:My site's URL is www.techinvaders.com

  2. At this point I not think so. I don't have that board so no way to test it. But I did include quite a few Intel drivers. But it may actually install a generic driver for it.

I did some research on it after Froggy asked me about it, but I dunno why the board doesn't support Linux. But most hardware manufacturers officially do not support Linux.

My suggestion is to just run the LiveDVD and see what happens.

You should know better than this....

  4. This distribution is copied from A/V linux at http://www.bandshed.net The license for linuxDSP plugins - which are part of the real A/V Linux - clearly states that you are not allowed to re-distribute them. You might like to think about this if you plan on including them.

  5. Demon,

I am the developer of AV Linux, You are using my artwork, screenshots, and webpage info without my permission or consent. Further that you are in contravention to the linuxDSP license which is currently exclusively granted to AV Linux by the developer. I have no choice but to inform AV Linux users about your plagiarism to avoid confusion. I respectfully ask you to remove the offending materials and cease using AV Linux in this manner.

  6. Deamon,

You might have good intentions with your project but there is no excuse for not doing your homework. It is irresponsible to claim ownership of this distro. Maybe you could have useful changes using 'remasteredsys'(sp) but you have to clearly get permission and if that happens, clearly state this on your website.

I know I have remastered my personal version of AVLinux and it is the coolest damn thing in YEARS. So I understand your idea to help others. Having found AVLinux, I cant shutup talking about it! ... But I dont understand ripping off AVLinux. It is against everything about Linux.

  7. Hi Manmohanjit Singh,

I have been using Ubuntu 9.04 + multimedia apps, for a while in a machine based on this DG33FB, without any problem. In fact
I do have more than one machine with this board, and I have
tried most Distros including multimedia based ones,in these machines ,and I experienced no problem .I am surprised by your comment.
